희망 아래 (Under the Hope)
<희망 아래>는 이재형 작가가 한국의 고래인 '한국계 유령고래'를 재해석한 작품입니다. 제주국제공항 1번 출구 로비에 설치된 이 작품은 마치 공중을 유영하듯 떠오르며 제주를 찾은 여행객들을 따뜻하게 맞이합니다. 작품 속 유려한 빛의 움직임은 지나가는 이들의 시선을 사로잡고, 거대한 조형물의 스케일은 관람객의 감정을 고조시켜 작품에 몰입하게 만듭니다. 삶, 건강, 풍요를 상징하는 고래는 우아하게 헤엄치는 모습을 통해 자유와 희망의 메시지를 관객에게 전합니다.
이름에 ‘한국’이라는 단어가 포함된 것처럼, 한국계 유령고래는 한국과 생태적으로 깊은 연관이 있는 동물이었습니다. 그러나 19세기부터 20세기에 걸친 고래사냥과 환경오염의 영향으로, 이 고래는 1977년 울산 해안에서 마지막으로 두 마리가 목격된 이후 한국에서는 더 이상 발견되지 않고 있습니다. 이재형 작가는 작품을 통해 우리가 지켜야할 소중한 자연에 대한 경의를 표하며, 관객에게 자연과의 조화로운 공존에 대한 질문을 던집니다.
"Under the Hope" by artist Lee Jae-hyung reimagines the Korean Ghost Whale, a creature deeply tied to Korea’s natural heritage and a symbol of life, health, and abundance. Installed in the lobby near Exit 1 of Jeju International Airport, the sculpture appears to glide through the air, greeting visitors with a graceful presence. The interplay of light and fluid motion creates an immersive experience, captivating onlookers and evoking a sense of freedom and hope.
The Korean Ghost Whale, once ecologically significant to Korea, is now critically endangered. Extensive hunting and environmental pollution in the 19th and 20th centuries led to its decline, with the last sighting in 1977 off Ulsan. Through this artwork, Lee honors this lost species while inviting viewers to reflect on the fragility of nature and the importance of conservation. The piece serves as a poignant reminder of our responsibility to coexist harmoniously with the natural world.
