전 세계 80종 이상의 고래 중 유일하게 "한국"이라는 이름을 가진 한국유령고래는 문화적, 생태적 연관성을 강조합니다. 그러나 이 고래는 19세기와 20세기의 사냥과 환경 오염으로 인해 심각한 멸종 위기에 처해 있으며, 마지막 목격은 1977년 울산 해안에서 두 마리가 발견된 것이 전부입니다. 이후로는 더 이상 목격되지 않아 환경 손실의 상징이 되었고, 보존의 필요성을 일깨웁니다. 이재형 작가의 작품은 이 소중한 종에 경의를 표하며 자연과 조화를 이루는 세상을 상상하도록 관람객에게 촉구합니다.
This unique whale, among over 80 species worldwide, highlights its cultural and ecological connection to Korea. Tragically, it is critically endangered, with numbers drastically reduced due to hunting and pollution in the 19th and 20th centuries. The last sighting in Korean waters was in 1977 off Ulsan, and since then, no further sightings have occurred, making it a symbol of environmental loss and the urgent need for conservation. Lee's artwork pays tribute to this irreplaceable species, urging viewers to envision a world where it thrives in harmony with nature.
